Robert L. Green, Secretary

Robert Green

Robert L. Green was appointed Secretary of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services by Governor Larry Hogan in April 2019.

Green is not new to the field of corrections. He has more than 34 years of experience in public safety and corrections, most recently as Director of the Montgomery County Department of Correction and Rehabilitation. During his career, Green created a Detention Services Re-Entry Unit at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility which was nationally recognized and replicated in other jurisdictions across the country. While under his watch, that department received numerous National Association of Counties awards for innovations and commitment to the best in correctional practices.

Secretary Green also served as the Director of Corrections and Corrections Bureau Chief for the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, where he worked with county and judicial leaders to successfully enhance alternatives to incarceration, serving under three sheriffs during his tenure.

Accolades aside, one of Green’s proudest accomplishments is beginning his career as a correctional officer in Maryland in 1985 following completion of the academy. His first hand experience as a correctional officer has given him a unique perspective and advantage in not only the care and custody of those who are incarcerated, but of the men and women who serve and protect on a daily basis.

Known as a “get things done” type of professional, Secretary Green hopes to continue the impactful re-entry work he began as a correctional officer, applying some of the same strategies and successful programs within state facilities. “A significant number of the men and women who are incarcerated today will be released. Public safety is dependent upon the work we do to assist those in our custody to return to our communities and prosper,” said Green.

Green is a longtime member of the American Correctional Association and currently serves on the Commission on Accreditation for Corrections. Green currently serves two gubernatorial appointments for Governor Hogan as the Chair of the Maryland Commission on Correctional Standards and the State Justice Reinvestment Oversight Board.
