29th ANNUAL GOVERNOR'S CRIME PREVENTION AWARD WINNERS 2008

Each year the Maryland Community Crime Prevention Institute, along with the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions, and the Maryland Crime Prevention Association present the Annual Governor's Crime Prevention Awards.

This year there are 84 award recipients representing private citizens, community groups, businesses, government agencies, colleges and universities, law enforcement officers, and law enforcement agencies from throughout Maryland, each of whom have made outstanding contributions to the furtherance of crime prevention programming.

Recipients are being honored for activities such as organizing and maintaining Neighborhood Watch and Citizens On Patrol groups; participating with local citizens advisory boards and police-community relations councils; working with youth through efforts such as D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), School Resource Officer Programs, Teen Court, McGruff presentations, and G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training); offering a summer and after-school band program for youth in Annapolis; coordinating Project Graduation, an anti-drug and alcohol program aimed at high school seniors in Charles County and the GATOR-AID (Alcohol Impaired Driving) program in Frederick County; assisting with Sobriety Checkpoints in Howard County; sponsoring "GAL PALS," a mentoring program for young women in Frederick; working with Auxiliary Police Departments in Aberdeen, Frederick City, and Carroll County and an Explorer Post in Howard County; working with seniors through programs such as local Triads and Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (SALT) Councils, Smart Seniors, and the ALERT Watch Your Car Program; expanding and encouraging citizen and community involvement in crime prevention; providing crime prevention training to both civilians and law enforcement on numerous crime prevention topics, including Personal Safety, Drug Awareness, Domestic Violence, Rape Aggression Defense (RAD), Neighborhood and Business Watch, Operation Identification, Home Improvement Scams, Vehicle Safety, Gang Prevention and Awareness, Bank Security, Shoplifting, Internet Safety, etc.

Twenty-six (26) agencies submitted winning nominations, representing all geographic areas of Maryland, from Frostburg in Western Maryland to Salisbury on the Eastern Shore, from Baltimore City and Central Maryland to St. Mary's County. Three communities, Baltimore City (Northwest District), Pocomoke City, and the C.S.A.F.E. Hope Community in Cambridge, will be honored for their development/continuance of comprehensive community-based anti-crime strategies in Maryland. Also, eight law enforcement officers will receive awards for the performance of residential and/or commercial surveys in their communities.
