SALISBURY, Md.- Federal officials say a crackdown on crime is paying off. The U.S. Marshals Service on Tuesday announced that nearly 500 violent fugitives have been captured on the Eastern Shore of Maryland over the past year.

Officials announced that between October 2010 and October 2011, the U.S. Marshals' Fugitive Task Force working on the Eastern Shore arrested 476 violent criminals and sex offenders as well as fugitives wanted for other violent crimes like homicide, assault, kidnapping, drug and gun trafficking and vehicle theft.

The Task Force consists of investigators from the U.S. Marshals Office, Maryland State Police, the Salisbury Police Department, the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office, the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office and Maryland Parole and Probation.
