BALTIMORE -- The Supermax prison in Baltimore -- synonymous with Maryland's worst criminal offenders -- is getting a new name and mission.

The building where some offenders are put to death is also getting a new method of business.

The newly-named Chesapeake Detention Facility now houses only federal pretrial detainees under supervision of the U.S. Marshal's Service. No state inmates or detainees are housed at the facility any more.

In exchange for the facility, federal officials will pay the salaries of the public safety personnel, and they're also paying $20 million toward the construction of two new minimum security facilities in Jessup.
