DPSCS Facilities Recognized for Reduced Injury Claims and Costs in 2009
Seven locations will receive special recognition from the State Employee Risk Management Administration during annual conference

Towson, MD (May 27, 2010)--- The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is doing more than increasing public safety in Maryland, our facilities are also increasing workplace safety. During 2009 several locations had a decrease of more than 10% in injury claims over the previous year, while others decreased overall costs associated with claims. The findings are measured by a team of risk managers from SERMA, the State Employee Risk Management Administration.

From the Division of Correction, five institutions saw the number of claims drop last year. Western Correctional Institution reduced cases by 26%, Maryland Correctional Training Center by 21%, Jessup Correctional Institution by 19%, Maryland Correctional Adjustment Center by 13% and Maryland Correctional Institution in Hagerstown by 10%. The Division of Parole and Probation was also recognized for an 18% drop in claims over 2008.

The Central Maryland Correctional Facility was also chosen for the Health and Safety Working Group Award of Excellence due to a 52% reduction in claim expenses for injuries occurring from 2008 to 2009.

SERMA consists of risk consultants who work with state agencies to provide management services in a joint effort to reduce the potential for workplace injuries and control workers’ compensation costs to the State. Reducing workers’ compensation costs starts with reducing the number of job related injury claims.

“Risk management is an integral part of any business, but especially in a correctional agency where the well-being of our staff is of the utmost importance to our mission of providing public safety,” expressed DPSCS Secretary Gary D. Maynard. Over the past few years DPSCS also implemented a Managed Return to Work Program that not only reduced the risk of injury, but also reduced injury-related costs for the Department. These efforts resulted in less accident leave being used by staff, as well as a reduced need for overtime to replace staff out on leave. DPSCS estimates a $1.5 million savings in projected payment of claims made during FY09 over FY08.

Each of the DPSCS facilities was recognized at an annual SERMA Conference today, May 27th to acknowledge their significant reduction in claims for 2009.
