State Police Investigating Inmate Death at North Branch Correctional Institution
TOWSON, MD (December 9, 2011) – Detectives from the Internal Investigative Unit of the Maryland Department Of Public Safety and Correctional Services have notified State Police after the death of an inmate at North Branch Correctional Institution in Cumberland. By law, Maryland State Police are the lead investigators in the case of a suspicious death inside a Maryland correctional facility. The Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.
The deceased inmate was 57-years old, serving 40 years on a rape charge. Correctional officers found him unresponsive in his cell at the maximum-security facility Thursday night and immediately started CPR until paramedics arrived. The inmate was taken to the local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
