DPSCS Investigating Detainee’s Apparent Suicide
TOWSON, MD (August 5, 2013)---The Internal Investigative Unit (IIU) of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services is investigating the apparent suicide of a pre-trial detainee.
An officer doing routine rounds found detainee James Smith unresponsive in his cell around one o’clock this morning at the Maryland Reception, Diagnostic, and Classification Center (MRDCC) at Greenmount and Madison in Baltimore.
Mr. Smith was a former police officer who was awaiting trial on a murder charge. He had been moved from Central Booking and was housed alone at MRDCC.
Upon finding Mr. Smith, staff immediately summoned medical personnel and began CPR. Baltimore City paramedics transported him to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
