[Jessup, MD]:On March 27, a group of U.S. Naval Academy midshipmen, poised to assume leadership roles as naval officers, embarked on a comprehensive tour of Jessup Correctional Institution (JCI), gaining valuable insights into correctional facilities and rehabilitation programs.

Led by the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services and JCI executive leadership, the midshipmen engaged in an immersive experience, interacting with facility staff and incarcerated individuals. The visit provided a firsthand look at the inner workings of the institution and highlighted the diverse range of programs and services available to those committed to personal growth and improvement.

During the tour, the midshipmen had the opportunity to engage with professionals in various fields, including intelligence and K9 operations. They witnessed firsthand the impact of restorative justice practices, educational initiatives, and programs offered by Maryland Correctional Enterprises and observed the impactful work of the Warrior Canine Connection service dog training program.

The tour, integrated into a criminal justice class at the U.S. Naval Academy, offered the midshipmen a unique perspective on the criminal justice system and the challenges and opportunities within correctional facilities. Their engagement was met with appreciation by both facility staff and incarcerated individuals.

The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services acknowledges the U.S. Naval Academy midshipmen for their commitment to learning and engagement. Such initiatives foster greater understanding and collaboration in the pursuit of effective correctional practices.
