[JESSUP, MARYLAND] - Secretary Atif Chaudry and his team from the Maryland Department of General Services (DGS) joined Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Secretary, Carolyn J. Scruggs on an enlightening tour exploring the impressive and highly productive MD Correctional Enterprises (MCE) facilities located in Jessup.

Did you know that within the Tag Plant at MCE, incarcerated workers diligently produce every license plate for the entire state, achieving an astonishing rate of close to 100 plates per minute using specialized equipment?

The Jessup Sew Shop operates as a hub of activity, crafting thousands of clothing items for both incarcerated individuals and employees of various state agencies.

Meanwhile, the Wood Shop showcases its craftsmanship by constructing high-quality furniture pieces and workstations.

MCE proudly employs over 1,200 men and women, imparting valuable work ethics and job skills while exclusively supplying quality products to government agencies and non-profit organizations. Its overarching mission is to offer structured employment and training initiatives, ultimately enhancing offenders' employability upon release.

Ranked among the nation's leading correctional enterprises, MCE plays a pivotal role in reducing prison idleness while delivering exceptional products and services in various plants throughout Maryland. These facilities encompass a wide range of activities, from meat processing to furniture restoration, flag production, and sign-making, demonstrating MCE's commitment to being entirely self-sustaining.
